How I Came To Love Corvettes
Celebrity Picture
We enter this hobby for our own reasons. And unless you have the bug, you'll never understand.

For me, I didn't know what a Vette was, until my Dad showed up with one, back in 1982. He brought home a new 1981, Claret red on red leather. Up until then, we drove around in police cars (he's a cop) or other Ford LTD's. There was the occasional Audi Fox, and a pretty cool '65 Impala. But the rest of the cars were nothing to write home about. The Vette came along as part of a post divorce, midlife crisis. And the car was sweet. I had never seen so many gauges, or power windows and door locks. I had never ridden in a car as fast as that Vette. And I never sat in a car that smelled so nice. Leather? I didn't know they put it in cars (in '82, I was ten years old).

This car gave my Dad and I something to do. We cruised it. I didn't know where we were going, and I didn't care. It felt really cool. It was cool. When you're ten, spending time with your dad is one of the best things around. Doing it in a Vette, is even better.

And so it went. The car didn't stick around for long. My Dad grew out of his affliction. But I never forgot it. And for the rest of my days, up until recently, I longed for a Vette.
And that day finally came...
