I polished the pipes with #0000 steel wool and they look great. Much better than the pic. I had a set of old rusty headers and 2 in.OD stock exhaust. The headers had a leak that I just couldn't fix. It made this horrible tick-tick sound. So, I installed the original ram horn manifolds and opted for Mid-America's 2.5 in. chambered system. One reason I switched to the stock manifolds was for the ease of bolt-on installation. Another was that at any time I could bolt on a set of side pipes. I am aware of the claims of a HP increase using headers. Maybe mine were restricted due to the 2 inch stock exhaust, but after I fired that engine up with the chambered system it felt like a different car. Had much better response and more seat-o-the pants power. I'm still rehashing in my head why this could happen. But consider that the stock manifold is flowing the air, what? About 8-10 inches before dumping into a 2.5 inch pipe. Another advantage to the stock manifold is the reduction in heat transfer to the interior. I don't have a/c and with the headers, the interior was like a sauna. In the heat of the summer, it was almost unbearable. Now its almost normal. The sound is awesome, very much like the power engine sounds of the '60's. The 2.5 in diameter pipes really helped the engine open up. So far its the best performance modification I've made. And no more tick-tick sound! ![]() 3-1-01 Here's a good picture of the Balwin Motion type racing stripe. The wheels are the old Cragar Tru-spokes and I just installed the L-88 hood. ![]() Me at our first car cruise 6-23-01. There wasn't a large turnout due to earlier rain. There was alot of interest in our '70 considering its L-88 hood was in primer. I don't think our Vette is quite ready for major cruises. The interior needs re-done and the paint fixed and hood finished. It was good to get out though and associate with other "gear-heads", discussing cars, engines, HP, etc. Most people commented on the engine work and the chambered exhaust turned a lot of heads when I fired her up. The red '32 Ford behind me was a real show stopper, it could have been featured in one of the street-rod magazines. There's a lot of money and time put into these machines. |
