Chassis

There was a lot of surface rust on the frame but it seemed accident free and there didn't seem to be any serious rust damage. The suspension was very tired and I had planned on doing suspension work during the winter 99/00. Late summer -99 I discovered that the chassis rail end plates were hiding small rust holes. They probably could have been fixed with body on frame but I decided that separating the body from frame would be the only way to restore the frame properly. At the time I had two separate small garages so I thought about doing it myself. However the landlord of the other garage decided to raise the rent 50 %... I chose to let that space go and pay someone else to do the chassis repairs.

The deal I made with a local Vette shop included a full restoration of the cars underside. Frame, front and rear suspension, underside of the body and engine compartment were all included in the process. The engine and transmission were only superficially tidied up but everything else was completely overhauled. Lots of new parts were installed including springs, shocks, wheel bearings, driveshaft anf halfshaft joints, poly bushings, brake lines and hoses etc. I took these pictures in march 2000. The finished frame looks perfect. I can't wait to get the car on the road again!

08/2000 Update! The chassis restoration is finished and the car is on the road again. It's like night and day difference when compared to the old tired setup. The car now sports 7 leaf rear spring and 460 lb/in front springs. I replaced the worn tires with new BF Goodrich Radial T/As (245/60-15). I had visioned adding beefier sway bars at both ends but I think I'll enjoy the car as it is for a while.
