Stereo system
The old stereo cassette player was non functional aftermarket unit from the seventies so I had ditched that allready in -98. After driving a couple of years without tunes I decided to install a stereo setup on my car. This is the stuff I bought.
I had problem with the head unit (it only worked when the engine was off!!) so I ended up using the old Blaupunkt CD player from my daily driver. It works better in the Vette than in my daily driver anyway (less skipping on rough roads) and is a higher end product than the Clarion in the pics, so I didn't mind. When I got the Clarion replaced I put it in my daily driver.
I installed the infinity Kappa 5 1/4" separates on new kick panels. I reinforced the kick panels with MDF glued to the back side. The kick panels are screwed to the pillar behind it and the speakers are attached to the kick panel. The crossovers are placed on a piece of MDF bolted to the original speaker position under the dash.
The 10" subwoofer behind the passenger seat is a very tight fit but doable. I might go with a 8" if I were to do it again though.
The enclosure is made of fiberglass. It measures 0,55 cubic feet which is about the minimum recommended for this diamond audio CM3 10" sub.
I fitted the 2 channel PG amp behind the passenger seat, I'm not totally happy with that as the seat can't now be pushed fully back. Also the Infinity Kappas are a bit unsensitive and would benefit from more power (I'm driving them with the head unit) so I may change the amp for a 3 or 4 channel unit and place it somewhere else.
5/2003 Update! I bought a Blaupunkt 4 channel amp and installed it in the place of the PG. About same power for the sub but now the front speakers are also driven by the amplifier. Sounds much better, no need to have the volume set at almost max as before. I'm very pleased.
