1991 Car #26

This site is dedicated to my 1991 Callaway Twin Turbo Corvette and to provide documentation and promote general knowledge about these rare and exceptional "Powerfully Engineered Automobiles"

In the late 1980's, international race car driver Reeves Callaway was running a successful business of turbocharging various high performance cars. With the introduction of the C4 Corvette (new body style/engine), Reeves turned the Engineering talents of his company into proving that he could build America's fastest car by turbocharging the already powerful (L98 Engine) C4 Corvette. The result was the Sledgehammer Corvette (shown at right) which still holds the American production car speed record of 254.76 MPH. GM took note and struck a deal with Callaway Cars to produce the Twin Turbo Corvette until they had perfected their then upcomming ZR1 engine for production. The Callaway Twin Turbo Corvette was available from 1987-1991 as option (RPO) B2K and could be ordered from select dealers in the US.

The Callaway Sledgehammer Corvette

In addition to the engine performance improvements, the Sledgehammer Corvette used modifications to the body panels for reduced drag and improved stability. This body modification was designed by Paul Deutschman and was known as the Aerobody. The Aerobody was later available as another option to B2K ordered cars. (could this be my car featured there?)

In 1987, the production version of the Callaway TwinTurbo B2K option provided 345 HP / 465 Ft. Lb of Torque, on a stock car with a top speed of 178 MPH, at a price of just over $50K. In those days, this brought the Corvette into the performance category of Ferarri and Lamborghini which cost in the range of $100-$175K. Dealer repairs of the Callaway Twin Turbo option were covered by the standard GM, 12 mo/12,000 mile warrantee with Callaway Cars, Inc. reimbursing the dealers for time and materials on repairs. This was the first and only time where GM has had a factory orderable non-GM performance enhancement on the Corvette. On the performance front, as the years passed Callaway continued to increase the performance of the B2K option. By 1991, the stock Callaway Twin Turbo Corvette produced 403 HP / 575 Ft Lb of Torque, providing a top speed of 192 MPH.

In 1990, GM introduced the ZR-1 Corvette which obtained similar performance characteristics as the Callaway Twin-Turbo option (and at a similar price) with a normally aspirated engine. So with the introduction of the all Aluminum LT1 engine in 1992, the B2K option was discontinued as this engine was not optimal for turbocharging. However, before the Callaway TwinTurbo option went away, Callaway and Deutschman went to work to provide yet a more powerful and stunning car, the Callaway Speedster.

The Speedster is a topless car!. It is truly awesome in design and is very aesthetically pleasing. It produces 475 HP / 634 Ft Lb of Torque and is presumed to break the 200 MPH barrier. Although this car is some 10+ years old, one would think it is a modern exotic. The Callaway Speedster below (which I was lucky enough to sit in) was for sale at Corvette Mike, where I purchased my 1991 Callaway Twin Turbo Corvette. This car was the prototype for the 475 HP engine. This is the same engine which is in my Turquoise Metallic 1991 Callaway Twin Turbo Corvette. As you can tell by this website, I am very happy with my Callaway Corvette and Corvette Mike.

So what about my car? Yes, it's the Turquiose Metallic pictured at the top of this page. If you want to see many pictures of it, Click Here to go to my picture page. My car is indeed a special car though. Why?

First because it's a 1991 which was the last year of the Callaway Twin Turbo production and they only produced 62 that year. And second because the original owner took it back to Callaway in 1993 for an upgrade to the 475 HP engine which installed in the Callaway Twin Turbo Speedster above. Click Here to see the performance specs and Dyno Graph on my car. I don't expect there were many of the 62 cars built in 1991 which were shipped back for this upgrade.
