Sears Point World Challenge, July, 2000

How we did at our first World Challenge race.

This year we decided to see how we stacked up against the big boys. At the Sears Point race, we finished 28th of 42 cars. Not too bad considering I had never driven Sears before. It was a bit intimidating racing with guys whos pit equipment costs more than my whole car. A competitive Speedvision GT car is well into six figures. My car is probably worth $30-35k, Crew for this race was my chief mechanic, John Best, of West Coast Corvettes, Todd Wiley, also from West Coast, and my Dad, who flew with my Mom from New Jersey to California to see this race in person.
We definitely had the best looking transporter in the paddock. Because Speedvision GT races are televised, West Coast Corvettes provided their transporter for the weekend. This baby got us a front row parking spot right at the entrance to the Speedvision paddock. Usually, I tow with a Suburban and a 24 foot trailer. With this thing, we get a lounge, kitchen, entertainment system, the works. If only I had a few hundred grand lying around...
The pre-race grid. I'm strategizing with crew chief Todd Wiley. We look pretty professional for a low buck team. My best race lap was a 1:51 in 90 degree heat. I was about 5 secs off the fastest race lap, but I figure two secs for lack of track knowledge (Sears is by far the hardest track I have driven,) 1 sec for horsepower (the fastest guys have well over 500,) and two secs for setup and overall driver ability. At a track I know well, I would have finished higher. Successes for the weekend were that I improved my time each session, despite the track getting slower (per the fast guys' times,) I didn't get lapped, I didn't crash, and I finished higher than I started. Moderate goals, I know, but we were way outspent in this league. I'm sure that with better track conditions and more experience, I could be well into the 1:47 or 1:48 range at Sears.
