My 1987 Trans Am GTA. F body fans will note the flag style mirrors, which were only put on about the first 50 GTA's ever built. Seems they were too heavy and dented the doors from their own weight(not on mine,) so GM went back to the normal F body mirrors very quickly. Even though I had done a little autocrossing before, this was the car that got me seriously into the sport. A fantastic handling car for the autocross course with absolutely no power. Handling mods were by P.A.S.,who built and ran very successful IMSA Firehawk series cars in the mid 80's. Since I really wanted a 5 speed, I got the 5.0 liter instead of the 5.7 L98. I also ran my first track event with this car, and promptly spun in the second turn of my first ever hot lap.

After the GTA, which I only had for about 18 months, I bought this 69 small block Vette from a local autocrosser. It was pretty stock when I bought it, but was quickly modified with a big engine, suspension mods, and later a significant diet removing about 300 pounds of non-go fast stuff. This was the car I learned to tinker on, and as such, I made lots of mistakes. I broke quite a few engines and transmissions, but the car was a lot of fun. This shot is at a PCA track event at Waterford Hills in Michigan. I instructed for PCA and other groups for a number of years before moving to California in 1997.

Here's the 69 at a PRO Solo event in Pontiac, Michigan. I didn't win. I wasn't even close to winning. I couldn't drive to save my life back then. Although the car was SS/BSP class legal at this event, I later decided to forget about rules and built a monster 406 that ran 12.20's at 118mph on street tires. It was a really unique engine with Dart heads, a "Smokey Ram" intake manifold and a tricked out Q Jet on top. The car was also converted from a 4 speed to a THM400 and then back again.
